Adam Koch

Established in 2011, the Iowa Caucus Project boasts four cohorts of college students telling the story of the Iowa caucuses through experiencing the Iowa caucuses. Leading into the 2024 caucuses, we wanted to catch up with the 2020 Iowa Caucus Project staffers, tap into their wisdom, and see what stuck with them four years later.

Adam Koch was a staffer for the 2020 Iowa Caucus Project. Adam graduated from Drake in 2022, majoring in Politics; Religion; and Law, Politics, & Society. After graduation, Adam performed a year of service through AmeriCorps and taught sevent grade math in Bridgeport, CT before beginning law school at the University of Minnesota.

Q: What was your role with the Iowa Caucus Project?

While at the Iowa Caucus Project, I primarily worked on producing video content. I particularly enjoyed interviewing Marianne Williamson. She had some, well, interesting responses that broke the mold of a typical video interview.

Q: Four years after your participation in the project, what has stuck with you?

After four years, I've fondly looked back on the comradery shared between our Iowa Caucus Project cohort. Even though we all had vastly different backgrounds and political ideologies, we were able to set them aside to create youth-focused content that most media outlets ignored. Every once and a while, a picture from the 2020 cycle will pop back up on my phone, and I'll miss my time getting to be around the energy of the Iowa Caucuses.

Q: Do you have an "only in Iowa" story? If so, what is it?

I fortunately have too many "only in Iowa" stories to mention. It probably would be a tie between when Joe Biden called my grandpa for his birthday and when Stephen Colbert arm wrestled me for his show!

Q: What words of wisdom do you have for current Drake University students anticipating the 2024 Iowa precinct caucuses?

I would suggest to enjoy them while you can! This cycle is likely to be the last first-in-the-nation caucus held in Iowa for a while. Even if you are not planning on participating, take the opportunity to enjoy an event.
